Dress code
In short- there isn’t one.
We won’t judge, but we understand that you may not wish to feel out of place, so we will say that Molasses Grill is a casual to fine dining restaurant therefore dress blue jeans, business casual, and jacket and tie are all customary.
Your evening should be as casual or special as you wish to make it. We welcome those in full black tie enjoying a romantic evening and also those in shorts and t-shirt just stopping in for a burger.
Corkage Fees
Virginia ABC law does allow guests to bring in outside bottles of wine.
We charge $25 for the first bottle and $20 per subsequent bottle.
With enough notice, we are happy to try to get in a specific wine you are looking forward to enjoying.
Legally, this only applies to wine. We are unable to allow guests to bring in liquor or beer in any container.
Dietary Restrictions
Because everything is cooked to order, we are happy to accommodate a wide array of dietary restrictions.
In a pinch we can offer a substitution or two, but often if you give us advance notice we can offer more choices or special dishes that accommodate your needs.
Due to the nature of our area, there are not many vegetarian or vegan options listed on our menu, but our Chef is certainly happy to create something for you, especially if you let us know ahead of time.
Our cooks have been well trained in dietary allergies and the dangers of cross contamination. You can trust in the Molasses Grill staff to take your needs seriously and watch out for your best interest.
Please note that if no advance notice of specifics is given, any special menu accommodations may result in a wait time for food.
Children
When you make your reservation, please let us know if there will be children included in your party and if there are any special needs, such as highchairs or space for baby carriers.
We do offer a childrens menu for ages 10 and under that includes chicken tenders, cheeseburgers, grilled cheese, and steak kebabs along with side items such as fries, sweet potato fries, green beans, and fruit.
If you have small children that may not have the patience to sit through a meal in the main dining room, we strongly recommend requesting seating in our Artist’s Cellar. There you would be the only diners and children can enjoy the freedom to get up out of their seat and explore.
Wherever they may be seated, nursing mothers should feel welcome to breastfeed at any time.
Due to space constrictions, our bathrooms do not have changing tables. If you would like a private comfortable area to change your baby simply ask any staff member and you will be escorted to our offices.
Payment
CASH, CHECKS, AND CHAMBER CHECKS ARE ALWAYS APPRECIATED
WE ACCEPT VISA, MASTERCARD, DISCOVER, AND AMERICAN EXPRESS.
WE ARE UNABLE TO ACCEPT PRE-PAID GIFT CREDIT CARDS. Because our computer system is set up for allowing gratuity, we can not easily run payment for cards with fixed amounts.
An automatic gratuity will be included on parties of six or more and on checks split more than four ways. Please note, splitting checks does add a wait time; the more ways a check is split the longer your wait may be.
If you want to pay the bill but wish to avoid a dispute, we strongly recommend calling ahead with your credit card information or at least giving your credit card to a staff member upon arrival. This helps avoid awkward arguments over the bill at the end of your evening. Our servers are instructed to always accept payment from the first person to hand them cash or credit card.
Expired Certificates
Gift certificates are good for one year from purchase date.
Upon request, with reasonable circumstance, we will honor an expired gift certificate for the full amount provided the expiration date is within 30 days of the reservation date.
Upon request, with reasonable circumstance, we will honor an expired gift certificate for half of the remaining amount provided the expiration date is within three months of the reservation date.
If a gift certificate is more than 3 months expired, our accounting and computer system is no longer able to process the transaction and we are unable to accept it.
If a gift certificate is lost, please contact us and we will be happy to replace it. If you wait until it turns up it may be expired. Just tell us who purchased it, the amount, and approximately when you received it and we will be able to track it in our records and re-issue the certificate immediately.
If you are having trouble finding time to make it to Molasses before an upcoming expiration date, perhaps consider putting the certificate towards take-out food or off premise wine and beer.
Artwork
The majority of the artwork in the building is by Chef Steve Schopen.
We also feature many rotating pieces by other local artists including Rebecca Rodgers, who has moonlighted with us as a bartender since 2010.
Please don’t hesitate to inquire about purchasing a piece you see on display or to arrange a private viewing of more pieces by any of the artists.
Bringing In Food
We ask that guests please refrain from bringing in cakes or other outside food. Molasses Grill does offer whole cakes to help you celebrate and can be purchased with 48 hours notice in a variety of sizes and flavors.
If you must bring a cake or outside food into the restaurant, we will store it, present it (including candles), cut it, plate it, serve it, and package up any leftovers for you to take back home for a $3.00 fee per guest.
With any food not prepared in our own health department inspected kitchens, we can not be held liable for any adverse effects that may occur from consumption. Due to this, we kindly insist that you do not offer cake to guests dining in our restaurant who were not invited by you. We are also not liable for any damage to your cake or food item while we store it, serve it, or package it. If you would prefer the cake/food item remain with you while you dine it must not encroach upon other diner’s space or create a possible tripping/safety hazard.
If you have a dietary restriction or medical condition that require certain foods you think we may not be able to provide, please contact us prior to your reservation so that we can work out a way to assist you.
Service Animals
As we understand the regulations as outlined by Virginia Department of Health and the ADA only those animals that have been trained as, and legally sanctioned as, service animals may legally enter a restaurant; and then only in the service of a legally identified disabled person.
We are also given to understand from the legal code that if we believe that the animal’s presence or activities may result in a health or safety hazard, that we are within our rights to ask a guest not to bring the animal in our restaurant, or ask the guests to wait to be seated in a more appropriate area, such as further away from our open kitchen and service areas or further away from guests with severe allergies.
Therefore, we kindly ask that you notify us of any service animals prior to your reservation time so that we may make arrangements to best accommodate you and fulfill our obligations to our other guests.
We hope that you will understand that we may ask you to fill out and sign a simple form (in compliance with the ADA) to best observe local health code laws.
