Molasses Grill is owned and operated by Chef Steven Schopen and his wife Karen Schopen. Chef Steve was born and raised in the countryside of Kent, England before he went on to work in restaurants all over the world including England, Germany, Sweden, Morocco, Washington D.C., and Michigan. Karen brings to the business over 25 years of professional experience in the restaurant and hospitality industry.
It wasn't until 2005 that they opened the doors of Molasses Grill, finally making their twenty year dream of having their own restaurant a reality. The Grill is utterly a family operation with the four Schopen children (daughters Fay, Lauren and Brittney, and son Mitchell) growing up in the restaurant industry and still working alongside their parents whenever they are in town. The family atmosphere extends beyond blood to the Grill staff, many of whom have been with the restaurant for years and are counted among the Schopens' closest friends. This lends a warm, inviting, and fun atmosphere to the Grill's operation that is sure to be felt by both long time patrons and first time customers.
When approaching his dishes, Chef Steve is relentless in quality and detail. All ice creams, desserts, dressings, marinades, and sauces are made from scratch in house with nothing being sacrificed to save time or to pinch a penny. Seafood and meats are sourced within Virginia and North Carolina whenever possible and always from premium fresh purveyors. Vegetables, fruit, herbs, eggs, and other ingredients are seasonally sourced from local and Virginia farmers, both large and small.
While the menu in place is crafted for your enjoyment, Chef Steve and his culinary team are well known for going out of their way in order to please their diners. In the mood for something you don't see on the menu? Tried a dish a year ago that no longer appears as a selection? If the ingredient is under the roof they will make it for you. Unorthodox flexibility in a gourmet restaurant is just one of the many hallmarks of Karen and Steve's lifelong commitment to hospitality.
The personal attention and flexibility offered reaches well beyond the menu. Tables and rooms are arranged and decorated to your whim for any occasion. Karen works with the local florists to create arrangements specific to your event, from centerpieces that reflect your bridesmaid's dresses for your rehearsal dinner to her favorite flowers waiting on the table for your anniversary. Karen and Chef Steve welcome the chance of helping you personalize your special event.
So much caring detail has gone into every aspect of the Schopen's restaurant. Starting with the extensive renovations and restorations they took on themselves seven years ago, to the meticulous detail that Chef puts into each dish he prepares today, you can't help but notice their personal touch. Choose Molasses Grill as the perfect location for your event, meeting, special occasion, or just choose to join us for cocktails and appetizers. You will be sure to feel Karen and Steve's life long commitment to quality presented in an atmosphere of easy, friendly professional service.
